With the recent warm weather and steady winds, ice out on Maine lakes is happening fast and furious. It is a wonderful time of year and while we are out there with frozen fingers looking for that first open water fish of the season, keep in mind that the water is still very cold. An early swim is not something that would be very enjoyable and it may be life threatening. Wear your life jacket and watch out for those strong winds and sudden storms that can sweep in. Soon the black flies and mosquitos will be here so lets enjoy it while we can. Many lakes in south central Maine are now wide open and it won't be long until some prime salmon waters will open up north of Augusta. Be safe and keep those ice out reports coming in, we will post them as soon as possible.
